Johnny Depp to divorce after just 15 months of marriage

Many Texas readers are aware that actor Johnny Depp has been notoriously shy of marriage, and fathered several children with a long-time partner prior to finally tying the knot with model and actress Amber Heard, who is 22 years his junior. That marriage, which took place just 15 months ago, is now headed for divorce. Complicating matters is the fact that Heard is making claims that she has been subjected to multiple acts of verbal and physical abuse by Depp over the course of the short marriage.

Heard claims that during a recent altercation at one of the couple's homes, Depp threw his cell phone at her, hitting her in the cheek and eye. Police were called to the scene, but when they arrived, Heard simply said that the couple had been arguing. They did not note any signs of physical abuse at the time. However, Heard filed for divorce just days after the altercation and then sought a restraining order against her husband later the same week.

Representatives for Depp claim that Heard is fabricating allegations of domestic violence in order to obtain a more favorable divorce settlement. It was noted that later in the evening after the alleged assault took place, Heard was seen and photographed in public with friends, and showed no signs of bruising. In court, the judge refused to order Depp to attend mandatory anger management courses. He also refused to order Depp to pay the $50,000 monthly spousal support that Heard asked for.

As this case moves forward, it is important to note that domestic violence is a very serious issue, and one that should never be taken lightly. That said, there are occasions when one spouse will make a claim about abuse that is not based in fact. In many of those cases, the court is able to determine fact from fiction, and the party that has fabricated abuse does not fare well in the divorce. It remains to be seen how the Depp/Heard divorce will proceed, but many in Texas will be watching as the matter develops.
