Kaley Cuoco's prenup saves her from spousal support payments

Many Texas readers are familiar with the work of actress Kaley Cuoco. She plays Penny, the ditzy blonde on the hit television show "Big Bang Theory." While Cuoco may be believable in that role, in reality, the actress is anything but dumb. In her recent divorce from her husband of less than two years, Cuoco was saved from paying spousal support by a well-crafted prenuptial agreement.

Cuoco's television contract is worth a reported $72 million. She married her husband, tennis player Ryan Sweeting, after a brief courtship. While Sweeting is also something of a celebrity in his own right, his net worth is paltry in comparison to that of his former wife. Sweeting sought spousal support as part of the divorce, but he was unsuccessful.

In addition, Cuoco was able to retain both of the couple's homes, one in Tarzana and the other in Santa Barbara. Sweeting will receive a payment of $165,000 as part of the divorce, and Cuoco will foot the bill for his personal trainers. Sweeting is also able to walk away from the marriage with any cash or gift certificates that he had at the time the couple wed.

While most Texas readers do not have a $72 million salary to protect, no one wants to lose assets if a marriage ends, especially if it ends within two years of saying "I do." However, without a properly drafted and executed prenuptial agreement, that is exactly what can happen. These marital contracts outline what each spouse will be entitled to receive in the event of a divorce. In addition, a prenup can also address the issue of spousal support. In Cuoco's case, those provisions may have saved her millions of dollars that could have been lost to alimony.
