Mandy Moore asking ex for spousal support for pets

From time to time, a celebrity divorce case will yield details that are so unusual as to make the news. While many Texas spouses struggle over the level of spousal support or the length of time that payments will be issued, some people take a slightly different approach. Actress Mandy Moore provides an example in her attempt to have her former husband pay support for the couple's eight pets.

Moore married musician Ryan Adams in 2009, after the couple were briefly engaged; they filed for divorce in early 2015. The pair did not have children, so there is no child support at issue within the divorce. Moore, however, is asking Adams to pay her a monthly "pet support" payment. The total amount of the requested monthly payment is $37,000, although it is unclear whether that entire amount is intended for the care of the animals. In addition, Moore is asking that Adams take four of the pets immediately.

Adams has enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years and earns an estimated $151,000 per month. Moore, on the other hand, brings in considerably less than that amount. She asserts that Adams has failed to assist in the care of the animals, and states that she has had to miss work in order to take care of their needs.

Many Texas readers will find this request ridiculous. However, each and every divorce case is unique and is based on the circumstances of that particular couple. If Moore is able to make a convincing argument about the needs of the couple's shared animals, it is not out of the realm of possibility that the court will grant her request and require Adams to provide financial support. Whether or not that is considered spousal support or "pet support" is yet to be determined.
