How to help your divorce attorney help you

Working with an attorney is the most efficient and effective way to move through a Texas divorce. Throughout that process, spouses can do a great deal to move their own divorce forward. An attorney is there to provide legal advice and guidance, and to draft the documents needed to formally end the marriage. He or she cannot, however, accomplish all of the items needed to complete a divorce. Spouses are required to actively participate, and to assist the attorney in moving the divorce process forward.

One of the biggest mistakes that a spouse can make is to fail to provide the information that his or her attorney requests in a timely manner. For example, in order to complete the property division portion of a divorce, attorneys need documentation on the family's income, assets and debt. This requires the spouse to collect a wide array of account information, bank statements, tax returns and so on.

When important paperwork is missing, the attorney cannot move forward in structuring a property division negotiation strategy. Even worse, he or she may have spent a considerable amount of time looking through a client's file to find out what is missing, communicating with the client to request those items and following up to make sure that the requested items have been submitted. All of this extra work is billable time and makes the divorce more costly.

One of the best things that Texas spouses can do to make their divorce move forward is to respond in a timely manner to all requests for information or documentation. Even better, take a proactive approach and gather documents before they are requested. By helping one's attorney increase efficiency, spouses can reduce legal fees and make their divorce move forward smoothly.
