MVP Hamilton's baseball career up in the air, files for divorce

Former Major League Baseball MVP Josh Hamilton, currently on the Los Angeles Angels roster, filed for divorce against his wife in February. The petition was filed in Texas, where Hamilton previously played for the Rangers, and cites a long history of conflict between the spouses. Hamilton has also reportedly been involved in substance abuse, including a relapse earlier this year. His wife has filed a general denial to the divorce petition.

Hamilton's petition contained 34 requests, including prohibiting his wife from driving two vehicles that are in his possession. Hamilton also requested that his wife be prohibited from making negative remarks against him or his family and that she be prohibited from concealing the whereabouts of the couple's children. Current court orders prohibit Hamilton from unsupervised visits with the children and from going to the couple's homes in Texas and California; the California home is valued at $16.5 million.

Hamilton's continued baseball career is in question. He is in the third season of a five-year $125 million contract. However, statements from the Angels owner and manager call into question when and if Hamilton will return to the team.

The facts of Hamilton's high-asset divorce make it likely that disputes will occur over child custody, visitation and relocation in addition to distribution of the marital assets. Any individual who might be facing a similarly contentious divorce may want to consult a divorce attorney before filing the action. With knowledge of issues relevant to the potential divorce, the attorney may be able to advise the individual regarding the these issues and.
