Billionaire's divorce gets more complicated

Texas readers may be following the personal activities of billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin, manager and founder of a major hedge fund, who surprised many, including his wife, when he filed for divorce in the summer of 2014. According to his spouse, this is not the first time that she has been surprised with papers from her husband. She claims that she was not presented with the prenuptial agreement until right before the wedding in July 2003, and she signed the day before the wedding.

Now, she is trying to get the agreement overturned. She is claiming that she and her husband sought counseling from a therapist the wife thought was a neutral party. It turns out that Griffin had been seeing the therapist on his own before the joint session, and the therapist convinced Mrs. Griffin to sign the agreement as her husband-to-be requested. The document entitles the wife to approximately 1 percent of the couple's assets if they divorce.

In addition to asking for the prenuptial agreement to be voided due to her claim that she signed it under duress, Mrs. Griffin is seeking sole custody of the couple's children and permission to move them to New York. Furthermore, she is claiming that her husband removed furniture and artwork from their Chicago home while she was on vacation with the children.

The Griffin divorce is public record and issues surrounding the prenuptial agreement, custody of the children and the couple's property division have been documented. These issues will be resolved in the court as the process moves forward. Each of the parties will likely have already retained a support team of attorneys and financial experts.
