Ex-wife of former Dodgers owner must pay ex-husband's legal fees

Dodgers fans in Texas might be interested to know that a superior court judge decided on June 24 that the previous owner of the team is entitled to almost $2 million in legal fees from his ex-wife. After receiving more than $130 million dollars and several pieces of property in the divorce settlement, Frank McCourt's ex-wife Jamie McCourt contested the terms.

McCourt and his wife were married for more than 30 years. Upon their divorce, Jamie was given $131 free of taxation as well as multiple luxury homes that the couple purchased while together. In 2012, McCourt reportedly received more than $2 billion when he sold the Dodgers. His ex-wife alleged that he had undervalued the team when she contested their settlement. The superior court judge rejected the woman's claims in September 2013; he also ruled that she must pay McCourt $1.9 million in legal fees, the amount he reportedly spent on attorneys.

Her own attorneys unsuccessfully argued that the fees were excessive. Unless they file an objection within 15 days of the judge's decision, it will become final. The judge's ruling in the divorce case was issued around the same time that a civil trial against McCourt and the Dodgers was finishing up; a former paramedic asked for $36 million as compensation for an attack that occurred in the Dodger Stadium parking lot in 2011.
